improving animal health

Improving Quality of Life for Aging Animals

Picture
Just like people, as our pets get older, they have a higher risk of developing chronic inflammation and cardiometabolic conditions that can impact their quality of life. The good news is that Epitracker and its animal health subsidiary, Aluino, Inc.,  is advancing nutrition and medicine aimed to help our pets live longer, happier lives.

Along that front, Epitracker also continues to help continually improve the health and welfare of dolphins. Learn more about our commitment to dolphin health here

Chronic Inflammation

Long term effects on overall health

Treating inflammation, naturally

Picture
As dogs and cats age, they are susceptible to chronic, systemic inflammation that can impact their heart,  joint, and skin health.  While steroidal and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help, these medications may not fix the core, underlying driver for inflammation and may not be desired for longterm use.

Epitracker has discovered numerous small molecules that have promising anti-inflammatory profiles.  Some of these compounds are naturally found in animals and may be important to both prevent and stop chronic inflammation at its core. Our next steps are to advance these compounds through preclinical safety and efficacy studies.

Diabetes

A nationwide epidemic

New nutrients to better manage diabetes

Picture
An increasing number of cats and dogs are becoming obese, which is increasing their risk of developing  diabetes.  Unfortunately,  pets with diabetes have a shortened life expectancy.  Proper nutrition plays a critical part in preventing and treating diabetes in our pets. While it is clear that dogs and cats should limit carbohydrates in their diets, it is less understood which beneficial nutrients may be lacking to protect them against cardiometabolic diseases, including diabetes.

Epitracker has discovered numerous small molecules that may help prevent and treat hyperglycemia, the hallmark of diabetes.  Some of these compounds originate from the marine environment and may explain (beyond omega-3 fatty acids) why fish-based meals benefit feline health.  Some of these compounds are natural small molecules that have shown clinical benefits in an animal environment and may be ideal to  help manage and treat cardiometabolic diseases, including diabetes, in our pets.

Liver Disease

A silent killer

Picture
Over years, dogs can develop chronic liver disease involving abnormal fat deposition and inflammation that lead to cirrhosis and liver failure. Often, this condition is not detected until the liver disease is severe and difficult to treat. While the awareness of fatty liver disease in dogs has increased, there are currently no standard treatments available.

A novel approach for detection and treatment

By studying underlying drivers and risk factors for fatty liver disease, Epitracker has discovered a collection of naturally occurring lipids and amino acids that may help treat liver disease in dogs. These 'smart-screened' molecules were associated with lower liver enzymes. We plan to further screen these molecules in the laboratory to better understand how they work at the cellular level.
